Zanuck, Darryl Francis

Zanuck, Darryl Francis
(1902-1979)
Hollywood movie tycoon Darryl Zanuck served in the U.S. Army from 1916 to 1918 before moving to California to establish a career as a writer. He became a screenwriter for Warner Bros. Studios in 1923 and in 1925 became head of production. Following a dispute with Jack Warner, Zanuck left the company in 1933 and began working for 20th Century Films, later 20th Century Fox. In 1935, Zanuck became vice president, and he held the position until 1956. He was responsible for the production of many significant films, including The Grapes of Wrath (1940), Gentlemen’s Agreement (1947), and The Robe (1953). During World War II, he served with the Signal Corps and made films about the war effort. After breaking with 20th Century Fox in 1956, he returned to take over the company in 1962. The success of his The Longest Day (1962) helped get the studio back on its feet, and this was followed with The Sound of Music (1965) and Planet of the Apes (1968). Internal disputes forced Zanuck to resign in 1971.
