Rio Pact

Rio Pact
The Rio Pact, formally known as the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance, was agreed upon at the meeting of American nations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 15 August and 2 September 1947. While it represented a continuation of the “Good NeighborPolicy and was a formulation of the agreement at Chapultepec, the pact established a regional defense alliance that was further developed in the creation of the Organization of American States as part of the policy of containment. The importance of the agreement was highlighted by President Harry S. Truman’s attendance at the final sessions of the meeting.
