Pollock, Jackson
(1912-1956)
   Hailed as America’s “greatest living painter” in 1949, artist Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming. He studied under Thomas Hart Benton in New York City in the 1930s and for a time was employed by the Works Progress Administration. In 1946, he began the distinctive style of painting by dripping paint onto the canvas to create abstract patterns. He achieved national prominence through an article in Life magazine in 1949 and became a best-selling artist in the early 1950s. He died in an automobile crash.
