Nagasaki
   Nagasaki was the large seaport and center of war production on the west coast of Kyushu, Japan, where the second atomic bomb was dropped from a U.S. Air Force B-29 bomber on 9 August 1945. The original choice of target, Kokura, had been obscured by clouds forcing the aircrew to turn to Nagasaki as the alternative. The bomb, named “Fat Man,” was bigger than the one dropped on Hiroshima, but damage was limited by the proximity of the sea and a mountain range. Nonetheless, 2.6 square miles of city were totally destroyed and 80,000 people were killed. The following day, the Japanese government announced that it would accept the terms for surrender outlined at the Potsdam conference.
