Merchant Marine Act, 1936
   The Merchant Marine Act of 29 June 1936 was intended to further national defense by providing for the development of an adequate and well-balanced merchant marine and granting federal funding to enable the building or chartering of vessels, provide subsidies for ship owners, and establish a training program for merchant seamen. A U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps, which led to the Merchant Marine Academy in 1938, was established.
