Atomic Energy Commission

Atomic Energy Commission
(AEC)
The AEC was a fiveman board established by Congress in 1946 under the Atomic Energy Act to oversee the development and control of atomic energy. The commission took over control from the military and supported research in universities and industry on the use of radioactive material in all aspects, industrial and medical as well as military. The commission was first chaired by David E. Lilienthal, who was succeeded by Gordon Deans in 1950. The committee was supported by an advisory group and ran into some controversy when J. Robert Oppenheimer was suspended in 1953 as a security risk. The AEC ceased to exist in 1974, and its role was eventually taken over by the U.S. Department of Energy.
