Manhattan Project
   The Manhattan Project was the name given to the scheme to develop the atomic bomb in the United States during World War II. Initiated under the Office of Scientific Research and Development in 1942, direction was placed in the hands of General Leslie R. Groves, and the project got its name from the location of the headquarters of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in New York, where the top-secret endeavor was based. The development of the bomb cost more than $2 billion, and research was carried out by more than 600,000 scientists and technicians working in different locations, including Hanford, Washington; Stagg Field, Chicago; and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. However, the main development of the bomb, under the leadership of J. Robert Oppenheimer, centered in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The first successful test was conducted at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on 16 July 1945, and the first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, on 6 August 1945.
