Hays, Arthur Garfield
(1881-1954)
   Born in Rochester, New York, Arthur Hays graduated in law from Columbia University and became a successful corporate lawyer. He became counsel to the American Civil Liberties Union and was involved in the Scopes Trial (1925) and the defense of the Italian anarchists Ferdinando Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti (1927). In 1931, he was briefly involved in the case of the Scottsboro Boys but refused to accept the restrictions imposed by the International Labor Defense team. In 1933 Hays helped represent Georgi Dimitrov, one of the people accused of setting the Reichstag fire in Berlin. He wrote Let Freedom Ring (1928), Democracy at Work (1939), and his autobiography, City Lawyer (1942).
