Four Freedoms

Four Freedoms
Preparing the nation for the future possibility of war, in his State of the Union Address on 6 January 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said that the United States should “look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.” These four freedoms were freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Artist Norman Rockwell was so influenced by the speech that he produced four paintings illustrating the freedoms that were used as cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post (20 and 27 February and 6 and 13 March, 1943). The paintings were exhibited by the Office of War Information and turned into war posters to raise money for war bonds.
