Introduced by Robert M. La Follette Jr., the Congressional Reorganization Act streamlined the legislative process by reducing the number of standing committees from 48 to 19 in the House and from 33 to 15 in the Senate. It provided a staff to assist committees, an improved reference service, and a legislative budget. In addition, it increased congressional salaries from $10,000 to $12,500 and provided a taxexempt allowance.
